Mill River Lodge
Hidden within the wooded hills of Pound Ridge, New York, a secluded chalet-style home is perched above the winding waters of Mill River. A romantic collection of intimate outdoor rooms and expansive park-like gardens provide dynamic, year-round seasonal interest. Broad staircases embraced by fieldstone walls and immense stacked boulders found in the surrounding forest traverse the steep hillside while grounding the home within its natural setting. A cutting garden bounded by low boxwood hedging frames a tidy gravel path and neatly clipped lawn. Through the flowers, a tapestry of smooth black river rock creates a private Zen garden hand-laid by Principals Joseph Werner and Elizabeth Hendrickson. Far below the generous, lofted screened porch of the main house, a serene pool and inviting guest cottage look back up at a richly diverse palette of native and adapted plantings. Open lawns dotted with mature cherry trees and golf greens span the lowest level of the property before the land falls away into the forested valley below.
